Winter Edition 2008

FROM THE DIRECTORS DESK
Wow! What a hard act to follow. I heard it a million times, "Those are some big shoes you have to fill." ... and I
have to agree that Audrey Iverson did an awesome job as the Executive Director for HIC for nearly 22 years. So I
have decided not to even try to fill those shoes. I'm going to bronze them and hang them on the wall for
inspiration. I have my own shoes all laced up with rocket boosters attached. I'm already on the run in the
community spreading the word about HIC and the programs we have. We are now members of the Park Rapids
Chamber of Commerce and I've begun networking with their members for support of HIC. Just this week I got
handshakes from several businesses that will be working with us on fundraisers: Sue Tomte, Senior Sales
Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics, Kristine Walsh, Director of Admissions for Park Avenue School of Cosmetology,
and Carrie Parks, Co-Owner of Anytime Fitness have all agreed to partner with us on a community event
sometime this year. And that's just a start!

I'm thrilled to be here and appreciative of our Board of Directors for selecting me as your new Executive Director.
As a survivor of domestic violence, I am passionate about our cause, pledge my constant support to the
victims, and promise an unbridled enthusiasm for education and prevention of the malignant blight that is the
abuse of one person to another. My background in management (paper-pushing), human resources (helping
people), and sales (fundraising!) gives me some great experience to draw on to support HIC. Away from work you
can often find me teaching people how to train their horses, giving dog obedience classes, or just helping my
husband with the never-ending projects at the house. Having spent the majority of my adult life in the desert
southwest, I'm still struggling not to freeze but I must be learning as I now think anything above 20 degrees is a
warm spell!

I'm certainly not going to re-invent the wheel and so I look forward to continuing the many successful programs
that Audrey started. I have some new ideas and can't wait to meet with you and get your ideas, too! Please call
and/or come by the office and say hello.

For the victims,

Susan

Advocates Corner: By Pam
Well here we are back in the thick of winter again, and wishing spring was here.

I have been receiving some interesting phone calls lately, and I would like to share them with you. I have received
at least three calls since the last newsletter from mothers whose sons are being abusive to their daughters-in-law,
and/or grandchildren. They are speaking up in defense of the victims, and not their own sons. In speaking with
them, the general thought from them was this, "He (the son) learned this from his dad, and I'll be darned if my
grandchildren are going to live and learn that behavior. What can I do to help my grandchildren and daughter-in-
law get away?"

These calls are very encouraging to me. Could it be possible that the message is being heard, if only by a few,
that this behavior is learned behavior, and will continue unless we all make an effort to stop the cycle of violence?

AUDREY'S IMPRINT
I had the distinct pleasure of working with Audrey for 4-1/2 years here at Headwaters Intervention. During that
time she taught me how to be a good advocate, and some days how to be a better person. I, and others, will miss
her, but her imprint will always be here. I wish her the best for her retirement.

Thank You to all  my volunteer phone advocates, we couldn't do It without you.
